At our doorstep last night were several boxes from Smith and Hawkins nursery in California. For a Christmas present some nice person had sent us bulbs to plant. Since they live in California maybe they didn't realize that we are knee deep in cold up here in Boston. George called Smith and Hawkins to check on whether we could plant this late anyway, and the man at the nursery said that we cannot, but bulbs should be ok if kept in cool place like the garage, packed in a carton, until spring, when we can sneak them into the ground after the last freeze in March. Gosh, I hope that works. The delivery of these bulbs was a little ill-timed, but we will hope for the best, and it is the thought that counts.
