Necklaces
George and I went to the Sparks open house last evening together. It was fun to meet other crafters, although this one was not so well attended. Afterward we went for out for dinner at a Mexican restaurant near where I work called El Guapo. I had fish tacos and he had a shrimp burrito and it was very good. They had some "through the roof" hot sauce that I loved, but which kept George awake for awhile. Oh well.
I brought my box of 14 necklaces that I have recently made to Sparks for show and tell. They all urged me to sell them, and the owners of Sparks have said that they will be happy to sell them on consignment. Next week I will choose one or two and take them over there. My plan is to have a designer friend of mine set up a website for me to sell crocheted necklaces and earrings. I have to think of what to name it, but my "company" name for designs now is Wildflower Designs and maybe that will be fine.
One idea that I had is to make a picture of different color schemes of beads and accent beads, and then have people special order them. I could use the color wheel as a tool for choosing colors. It takes me about 3 hours to make one, and with the beads, wire and clasps, they should sell for no less than $50 each. A siimpler strand could be $30. I will have to think about how to do this, and maybe talk to Mike about how best to use a web site for this purpose. My friend Diane, the designer, will make it beautiful I'm sure, and it would be an outlet for my creativity. I really love making them and I certainly don't need to wear them all. Although I am learning with each one, and the ones I sell will not have any flaws at all. Learning how to wirewrap all the strands of wire so they don't come loose at the clasp has been an important lesson. Nothing is worse than having little wire ends poking you in the neck at the clasp. I've learned how to finish the edge with a drop of super glue, which holds those tiny wires in their place.
A quiet Saturday here and just what I need. George is off to the flying field to nail down the new rug that they use for takeoffs and landings. He is happy there, and I am happy here, having a quiet morning with kitty, thinking about my next necklace.

The fun starts now
I'm really happy that this week is almost over. I've been so busy at work, and so stressed about the event last Tuesday, that it has taken me three days to get my head back on straight. When dealing with work and "real" life, balance is key. I am finishing the report on the fundraiser today and we more than cleared what we were suppose to bring in, so it was a great success. The goal was set very high, which for me brought on a huge case of nerves for the past month, and we made it! Yahoo. Time to breathe again. I hate to keep harping on this, but it seems that has been all that is on my mind lately. I look forward to a rest next weekend when I go to Washington DC to visit Michael.
I hope to visit my favorite restaurant in Old Town Arlington, The Fish Market, where they have Annie Mae's Summertime Shrimp Salad--shrimp salad surrounded by strawberries and cantaloup and everything very fresh. I also hope to go to our favorite Japanese restaurant Asaka, at least twice, and to another favorite of Mike's, Hops, which has really yummy cinnamon rolls and other great food. I must be hungry. It sounds like it is all about food. Actually, it is all about "not cooking". I am looking forward to watching some movies, knitting socks, and just relaxing and talking and playing EQ together. This is just the trip I need to get my mind off work for awhile.

Socs
The name of our local ice cream place is called Socs. It is an ice cream stand that is very popular with the locals. Since it is only a mile or so from our house, and is on the way to a big shopping mall, we go there a couple of times a week. George and I have found out that if we want a cone that is manageable in size, we have to order the "kiddie" cone for $2.05. It is a huge thing, with a large scoop of ice cream barely able to stand on the cone. Last evening we had double chocolate brownie cones. They were delicious and just the pick-me-ups we needed after a tired day-after the event. They also have delicious slushes in all kinds of flavors like watermelon, canteloupe and peach. Really yummy. Italian ice is popular around Boston, where many Italians settled so long ago, and we have wonderful Italian restaurants and awfully good Italian ices.
A nice treat for a summer night. Even if it is 49 degrees.

Summer is over and winter is here!
Our temperature dropped 30 degrees. Today the wind chill is 46 degrees. It is cold. I have been running around the house closing the windows. Two days ago we were suffering in 90 degree humidity, and today we are wearing sweaters and raincoats. I used to live in Chicago, and the weather there changes every minute, but Boston can boast some pretty wierd weather too.
I am enjoying my leisure time now that the event is over, and I can start concentrating on my two vacations coming soon: visiting Michael and going fishing. Woohoo. The weather will be warm in Washington DC, so I'll need to get out my summer stuff once again. The weather where we go fishing in northern New Hampshire can be gray, rainy and cloudy, or it can be sunny and warm. Best to pack for both.
Flip flop is the fashion in weather as well as footwear these days.

Tired but happy
The event was a big success last night. I'm tired today, but already at my post at work. Recuperation will have to come later. I feel that it was a job well done, the pictures will be coming shortly. I'm very relieved that everything went well. Jimmy Tingle was the entertainment for the event, and he was funny and just great. George and I are going to his show at his theatre in Somerville soon. Back to work.

Stress day
Today is a day all about work. I am working on a fundraiser "party" for my organization which takes place at 5:30 this afternoon. Lots of people expected,and many people to introduce to other people. I have to go home in the afternoon and dress up a little. I don't mind doing it in the least, but I can feel the stress. I will be happy when it is over and things can go back to normal.
The heat is taking its toll on everyone. Very high humidity makes you feel like you are wading through the air. There is a liklihood of thunderstorms this afternoon and after the storms are through, the cool moves in. I can't wait.

89 degrees, dewpoint 74
Yesterday was a very hot day, and George and I had the devil's own time trying to stay cool. We have two rooms in the house that were livable, and spent a lot of time trying to recover from the heat. We needed to plant the tomatoes, and we had other flowers that needed potting, and we decided to just do it. George dug out the flower bed and we planted the tomatoes, and marigolds and zinnias. Then we put little vials of fox urine around the beds to keep Chuckie the woodchuck out. We also planted dahlias in the front of the house. It was very hot work. We suffered. We drank lots of Gatorade, iced tea, Fruit 2-0 and ice water.
The humidity was the problem, and the sweat just poured off of us. I rather foolishly decided to clean out a few boxes of old stuff from the farm that had been stored in the garage, finding stuff that needed to be donated to the thrift shop, a silver tray which is now polished and in the diningroom and some baskets which will be used outside and then thrown away after the summer is over. This is stuff that I moved over 5 years ago, and most of it I don't need or have room for anymore. We'd do a little work, and then run for the air conditioning.
The birds and squirrels needed lots of water too, and we set large plastic trays out for them that we bought just for this purpose. Who needs fancy birdbaths? The birds were in them all day, and the doves especially loved bathing in them, luxuriating in the water with their wings spread out and jumping in for a splashy bath. It was fun to watch them.
Today is another day of heat and then the storms come and it will be cooler for the rest of the week. I can't wait!

Current events
I usually don't comment on current events, but watching Afleet Alex win the Belmont Stakes yesterday was wonderful. Held back in the crowd until the last 1/2 mile, Afleet Alex let off a burst of pure speed and strength to win it by a mile. It was great to watch. What a horse.
The hot box
It is going to be 89 degrees today with high humidity. I am not going to church, which is un-airconditioned, and a "hot box" according to one of my church friends. George will brave the heat and the sweat, but I'm going to take the day off.
The windows of the house are sparkling clean. They hadn't been cleaned in a long time, and the housecleaners did a great job and were gone by the time we got home from our road trip. The light is shining in! When we got home, there was this lovely bouquet of flowers waiting for us as a thank you from our Wednesday night houseguest.
Mike called from Las Vegas last night and it was great to hear from him. His voice was hoarse from talking for three days. He is fine, sounded excited, and had a great time. He is coming home in a few hours on a early morning flight. As a "reporter" for Mobhnter, he had a lot of writing to do about the new EQ expansion, and it all sounds very exciting. He said he played a slot machine and lost $20 in about 8 seconds. I know that feeling. I've hardly ever had any luck on slot machines, and you seem to need a much bigger stack of twenties than I am willing to carry.
It will be a hot summer sunday here and I've got the pitcher of sweet tea ready in the kitchen. My big plans for the day include putting up the table and umbrella on the deck and reading the Sunday papers.

Yes, we do windows, and a good day for a road trip
The housecleaners are coming today to wash our windows inside and out. They counted the windows (37) and gave us an estimate and we accepted. They will arrive this morning so we are preparing to leave the house for the day.
I have packed carrot sticks, celery sticks and cherry tomatoes with a ranch dressing dip, crackers and cheese, fresh cherries, and cookies for our trip. We are not sure where we are going. The idea is to head up to New Hampshire to go to three shoe stores to try to find another pair of the kind of Teva-like shoes I bought two weekends ago. They are called Rafters, and I love them, and the discontinued style would only be found in this one chain of stores. Then we are heading out to western Massachusetts to Gardner for a model air show, and to Northhampton, where there is a bead store I would like to investigate.
Our destination is relatively unknown, all we know for sure is that we are planning to make a full day of it.

Hazy Lazy Summer
I am going to work on having a great summer and do all kinds of summer things. It seems the life just whizzes by, and we need to really make relaxing a high priority. This is my summer To Do List. I am going to take time to do these things:
sit on the lawnchair and read a book
run through the sprinkler
read one book every week at least
go for a day at the beach at least twice
eat lobster sandwiches at Revere beach
read my New Yorker on the lawn chair
read the Sunday funny papers
wear sandals to work every day
drink more sweet tea
take walks at the forest preserve
feed the ducks
go fishing
wear a hat every day
This looks like a good list to me. I have a lot of lovely straw hats, but sometimes I feel self conscious and don't wear them. That is very silly. I should be able to wear what I want at my age. I am not a red hat society lady, but I understand the principle. George and I love to go to the ocean, but to go to the beach it takes planning. Our favorite beach, Singing Beach in Manchester-by-the-Sea, is a private beach with no parking. If we go there we will have to take the train or park a mile away and walk. It is worth it. We need to do it. Gloucester has a couple of lovely beaches too, with ample parking, but you need to get there in the morning. I am very careful about sun and always take a beach umbrella. No sunburn for me.
Our summer vacation this year is to the cabin in Northern New Hampshire, where we read, fish, hike, grill our dinners and go moose watching. It is only one month away and I can't wait! In two weeks I will go to visit Michael in Alexandria, and I can't wait for that either! Things are looking up.

The ex-necklace
Cutting apart the necklace and saving the teensy beads was a lot harder than making the necklace in the first place. But I got it done. I'm sure it was the right decision. I started the new one, but decided I needed a few more green beads to complete it, so I will go shopping at Sparks today and work on it tonight.
Our houseguest left this morning, and things are back to normal. Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys are playing at a club in Somerville tonight, but I have decided not to go, since the cover is $14 and the music doesn't start till nine. George has an airplane club meeting and wouldn't be able to go, so that would mean I would go alone. I'm just not ready to pay $14 to listen to 45 minutes worth of music before breaktime. It is too late a night for me. I like to be fully awake in the morning when I go to work. Maybe I'm a Cajun coward. We will be going to Lousisana for a week in September to the Festival Acadien, and hear lots of great music. The dancefloor at this club in town is way too small to move, and people just jump around without hardly trying at all to do Cajun dancing. So, I'm going to stay home and work on necklaces and get my sleep.
We are having a beautiful week of sunny warm weather and only a few passing showers. Just enough to water the new plants we planted outside after work yesterday. The "snapdoodles" are in, and we just have to get the tomato plants in tonight. Then I start working on the window boxes with the purple and white petunias and pink geraniums.

I think I goofed
I finished this necklace last night, and put a jade pendant stone on one of the crocheted chains. As it happened, the jade hangs longer than I think it should and I'm faced with the choice of wearing it this way or cutting it all apart and starting again. All that would be lost is about 10 yards of wire. I guess I will cut it. But I thought I would put a picture of it here on my blog for posterity. It is my first dud. A design flaw that just doesn't seem right. In knitting, they say that good rippers make good knitters. In my life I have ripped a lot of rows of knitting. So now it is my turn to rip into the wire with my scissors and start again.
We are expecting an overnight guest to arrive this evening and the candles are lit and George is making his delicious oatmeal cookies with apricots, raisins and cinnamon chips. They really are good and the aroma fills the house.

Michael is off to Las Vegas for an Everquest Fanfaire today. He will meet with a lot of folks from Sony and, as the writer for Mobhunter.com, will meet lots of new people. Have a great trip Michael and have fun! I will miss you. Mom here says try to get some sleep :-). Las Vegas seems a world away from my little humdrum life here. I went to Las Vegas years ago, and now it has all changed with the huge casinos, shows and museums. Sounds like a Neverland.

late at night
Sometimes late at night when I try to go to sleep, my head just buzzes with ideas and it takes a while for me to calm down. It seems that my days are so full and busy, that I'm still not through thinking of everything. The days just whiz by. Tomorrow is another busy day for me and a lunch meeting at MIT. It should be interesting and fun and I'm looking forward to it and wish I could drop off to sleep as easily as George does.
We were sent some pictures of the party the other night, and George is shown in one of them as he got up to speak about the guest of honor in a little funny speech. He did a great job and I was very proud of him. He was all warm with the effort when he sat down again, and he took off his jacket to cool off. It was a brave thing, to get up and be funny off the cuff, so to speak.
Have a calm, relaxing evening, and I'll see you tomorrow.

it's off to work I go. We had a good weekend, but I didn't get much done. George did most of the laundry, bless his little heart, and I made a new necklace that is rather dramatic and learned how to weave in jump rings to hang more bobbles from. I would imagine it is very near over the top. But I like it.
We had a good dinner on Saturday night when we went out to the rather fancy restaurant. I have changed my mind about the dinner in retrospect. For $65 per person, I would expect something other than tap water in my glass. The water tasted awful, and when George drank it, he said "Burlington's finest". I wanted to drink spring water or mineral water with lemon, and since I don't drink wine, it was pretty important to have something nice to "toast" with. Many folks were hitting the cocktail bar or having wine, so water was not important to them. I had George get me a $2.75 club soda from the bar, which made do. The service was very good, with lots of servers. The hordoeurves were passed: bacon (not done well enough) wrapped scallops, chicken strips on a stick (I'm sure they call it something else, but that is essentially what it was), and stuffed mushrooms. The main course was great, but the dessert, a coffee-ice cream stuffed puff pastry with chocolate sauce was unimaginative. I could make the whole dinner at home any night of the week. Good, but not great. The function halls were busy at this place, and unfortunately, the larger one next to our room had a Greek wedding going on with what sounded like music to belly-dance to, making it hard to hear in our room. But I'm not complaining, really I'm not. We had a very good time, and the company was delightful. George and I said that we need to go out more often!

And a great time it was....
We had a very nice time at the dinner tonight. It was a dinner for one of George's co-workers who is retiring. A jolly group of 47 people met at a lovely restaurant and a private room. The hordoeurves were delicious, the bar was open, the dinner was perfect. George and I had roast beef with bernaise sauce, and the meat was just as good as Kobe beef, I swear. It was great. We had fun talking with our group at the table and afterwards there were short funny speeches. We had a great time.
And it was fun to kick off our shoes and look at our pictures when we got home.

Friday eve
I had a good day at work today, keeping busy and enjoying the pretty day by taking several short walks to the mail box, and around the block. The weather was glorious. Tonight George and I went to the pizza party for the after school club at church, and then went to Kohl's for a set of new sheets. We have company coming next week and decided to have something extra nice for the guest bedroom.
Tonight I watched silly stuff on TV and made this blue necklace. Last night I used some antique coral beads and new turquoise sparkly beads, and combined them for another rather dramatic necklace. I'm getting my technique down, and am much more sure of myself now about the placement of beads and length. Getting the length of each strand the same is trickly and I keep my yardstick close by my side as I crochet.
Addictive? Yep. I've made about 9 necklaces and have a lot more ideas for more. Tonight we stopped by a bead store in Winchester and I bought two strands of green jade beads. Today I bought some black and white ones at Sparks. It is just too much fun to stop now.
Saturday morning we are going to fly George's model airplane in the morning out at the flying field in the salt marsh and get some plants at Lowes and then off to a fancy dinner tomorrow night. I'm going to wear the amathyst and crystal necklace I made with my new evening jacket. I am looking forward to dressing up some and going out with George's friends and their wives. I need to figure out a way to sell these crocheted wire necklaces I think. But I love each one and look forward to wearing them.

Street Fighting Man
I did my walk tonight. I listened to the Stones on my IPOD. I went around the walk by the park three times, which is close to two miles at a rapid clip keeping time with the music. It was fun. There were a lot of mothers there in their lawn chairs watching their daughters play softball. I was happy to be moving.
In the past, several years ago, I lived in another city in the Midwest, and I decided to take a walk every night when I got home from work. At six o'clock sharp, I would leave the back door, no matter what the weather, and a lot of the time I walked to Paul Simon's Graceland. That music has a wonderful beat for walking. I walked every day for a year to the Lake Michigan shoreline and back, and at the end of the time, I was up to a fast four mile walk in less than a hour, and sometimes I took TWO four mile walks in a day. At that time I even ran part of the way I felt so good.
I look back on those days and wish I had never stopped walking those miles, but things change, and other stuff rises in the priority list. Now I feel the beginnings of aches and pains, maybe arthritis, and I'm bound and determined to make myself feel better. Walking is great exercise.
I'm committed again to walking every day and my goal is to get up to four miles again. I also just plain want to feel better and get my butt moving after sitting at a computer all day. This is the second day of my journey. I'm wringing wet. But it is fun to listen to music like Madonna and Mick Jagger and walk fast to the beat.
It's a good habit and I'm keeping it!

Little Miss Sweaty Mess
I went for my walk tonight as far as the duck pond. It was about 2 miles. It was fun going there, and I stopped to look at six adolescent geese and their mom and dad as they swam across the pond and came close to me eating grass and seeds. They were very cute. Then I started back. Uphill. By the time I got home, the lawnchair was looking awfully good and George brought me water. When I exercise, I really work up a sweat and there is no possibility of going anywhere afterwards. It takes me a full hour to cool down from an hour's walk.
But I did it and I will do it again tomorrow, and the day after that. I have committed myself to walking every day for one hour, and on weekdays that is from six to seven o'clock. Every darn night. Why not. If I can spend that much money on my teeth, I need to work on the rest of me too.
George is outside mowing, and then it is a baked chicken dinner and a trip to BJ's to get a case or two of Fruit20, my other obsession.
